2023-01-07 22:30

On January 6, 2023, Ambassador Fu Cong, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU met Ambassador Lars Danielsson, Permanent Representative of Sweden (rotating chair of the European Council) to the EU. They had candid and in-depth exchanges of views on China-EU relations, COVID response, the United States Inflation Reduction Act, the China-EU investment agreement and other issues.

Ambassador Fu said that China has all along viewed China-EU relations from a strategic and long-term perspective and upheld the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership. China supports EU strategic autonomy and regards the EU as an important player in this multi-polar world. The recent 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China delivers a clear message that China will maintain the continuity and stability of its internal and external policies and remain committed to advancing reform and opening up, laying a solid foundation for the development of China-EU relations. China believes partnership is the main theme of China-EU relations. With strong economic complementarities and broad space for cooperation, there are no conflict of fundamental interests between the two sides. In December 2022, President Charles Michel of the European Council visited China and had talks with President Xi Jinping. The two leaders set a clear direction for the development of the bilateral relationship. China stands ready to work with the EU to actively follow through the leaders’ consensus, deepen high-level exchanges, and promote communication and cooperation in various fields. Noting the profound traditional friendship between China and Sweden, Ambassador Fu expressed the hope that during its presidency of the European Council, Sweden would take a constructive and practical approach and maintain the upward momentum of China-EU relations.

Ambassador Danielsson welcomed Ambassador Fu for assuming the new role. He noted that China is one of the most important forces in the world and developing relations with China has remained a priority of the EU. President Michel’s recent visit to China fully reflects the importance the EU attaches to bilateral relations. During its presidency of the European Council, Sweden will play a positive role in promoting China-EU relations.
