Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU Speaks on a Question Concerning the European Parliament's Common Foreign and Security Implementation Report on China
2022-02-17 21:12

Q: The European Parliament at its plenary session today adopted the reports on the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defense Policy for 2021, claiming that China’s display of force in the South China Sea, East China Sea and Taiwan Strait threatens regional peace and stability, accusing China of violating human rights of ethnic minorities and cracking down on democracy and freedoms in Hong Kong and Macao, and advocating for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. What is your comments?

A: The above-mentioned reports adopted by the European Parliament make irresponsible comments on China’s internal affairs, attack and discredit China’s human rights situation, and deny China’s legitimate right to safeguard its sovereignty and security. We express our strong disapproval of and firm opposition to them.

I would like to reiterate that Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Xinjiang-related affairs are entirely China’s internal affairs, which allow for no foreign interference. By putting people front and center in human rights development, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government have explored an approach that suits its national conditions, one that is endorsed by all Chinese. The current situation in the East and South China Seas remains generally stable. While being firm in safeguarding territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, China hopes to resolve maritime differences with countries concerned through consultation and negotiation, so as to jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the region.

I would like to point out that for quite some time, the European Parliament has repeatedly made irresponsible comments on China’s internal affairs and played up the so-called “China threat” in its policy reports. The relevant reports dismiss basic facts and are full of ideological bias. We urge the European Parliament to put itself in the right position, view China’s development and domestic and foreign policies objectively and rationally, abide by international law and basic norms of international relations, stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and stop making irresponsible remarks so as to avoid affecting the development of China-EU relations.
