Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU Speaks on a Question Concerning the Remarks on China by EU Leaders at the Munich Security Conference
2022-02-21 06:19

Q: During their speeches at the 58th Munich Security Conference, EU leaders mentioned China several times. They claimed that China and Russia are seeking to replace the existing international order and prefer the rule of the strongest to the rule of law, intimidation instead of self-determination, and coercion instead of cooperation, while adding that the West is facing the competition between democracy and authoritarianism. What’s your comment?

A: When the West faces problems, it should first reflect on its own behavior. For all the international and regional hotspots, is there one that does not involve intervention or manipulation from the West?. Labeling China with various accusations and playing up the so-called China threat to shift people’s attention will not help solve its own problems.

It’s necessary to prevent Cold War thinking in the traditional security field, and more importantly stay alert to it in the ideological field. Those who hold this mentality attempt to put their own ideology above others’. They seek to impose on others their own model and stoke confrontation between countries with different values. Their attempts do no good to dialogue and cooperation among major civilizations in the world.

As State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi put at the Munich Security Conference yesterday, the world faces once again the danger of division and confrontation, and only when countries row the oars together and cheer up each other, rather than undercut and come after one another, can we overcome the current challenges and sail into a bright future. China and Europe are two major forces and great civilizations. We can, and we must, provide more stability and positive energy for the world. We hope that the EU side would adopt a right perception of China and work jointly with China to make the world a better place.
