Questions and Answers Concerning the Taiwan Question (5):Why are the Taiwan question and the Ukraine issue uncomparable at all?
2022-08-26 16:30

The Taiwan question and the Ukraine issue are different in nature and are not comparable at all. Most fundamentally, there is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the Taiwan question is entirely China’s internal affair. And the Ukraine issue arose from dispute between two countries, namely Russia and Ukraine.

As a result of the civil war in China in the late 1940s and the interference of external forces, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have fallen into a state of protracted political confrontation. But the sovereignty and territory of China have never been divided and will never be divided, and Taiwan’s status as part of China’s territory has never changed and will never be allowed to change. Any country in the world, including European countries, has the right and means to manage its own internal affairs within its sovereignty. The real purpose of drawing an analogy between the Taiwan question and the Ukraine issue despite their completely different nature is to endow Taiwan with the status of a subject in international law, to misinterpret the cross-strait relations into relations between countries, and to create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan”. The essence of this comparison is the violation of the one-China principle, infringement on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and interference in China’s internal affairs.

According to the Charter of the United Nations and international law, all countries are obliged to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries and not interfere in other countries’ internal affairs. Some countries emphasize the principle of sovereignty on the Ukraine issue, but keep challenging China’s sovereignty and the one-China principle on the Taiwan question. Certain countries even deliberately create tensions in the Taiwan Strait to serve their own strategic interests at the expense of the well-being of people across the Strait as well as regional peace and stability. This is obviously a blatant double standard, a disregard and a violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, which the Chinese side will never accept.

Taiwan is not Ukraine. The Chinese government and its people are determined to uphold national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and safeguard core interests. Those who play with and fan up the fire on the Taiwan question will only wind up burning themselves.
