Questions and Answers Concerning the Taiwan Question (6):How to view Nancy Pelosi’s visit?
2022-09-06 16:30

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, in total disregard of China’s solemn position and firm opposition, went ahead with the visit to China’s Taiwan region, causing serious consequences. The Chinese government has taken lawful and justified countermeasures to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Nancy Pelosi is the incumbent leader of the US Congress and the third-highest-ranking official in the US government. Traveling in a military aircraft, Pelosi paid a high-profile “official visit to Taiwan”, as her office described it in her arrival statement. Her visit is a major political provocation upgrading the official interactions and substantive relations between the US and Taiwan. It seriously violated the one-China principle, seriously run counter to the US political commitment of maintaining only unofficial relations with Taiwan, seriously infringed upon China’s sovereignty, seriously interfered in China’s internal affairs, and seriously undermined peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

China has made utmost diplomatic efforts to avoid this crisis imposed on China. We had repeatedly warned the US through various channels of the grave nature and severe harm of this visit. We made it clear that China will not sit by and watch and all consequences arising therefrom must be borne by the US. The international community had been warning the US of the potential consequences as well. Many openly pointed out that the visit was a completely unnecessary, egregious provocation and could trigger a serious crisis. Sadly, however, the US turned a deaf ear to all of those and just let the visit happen.

Faced with the blatant provocation of the US side to violate China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, it is only natural that China makes a firm response. The comprehensive measures taken by China are necessary and timely. Taken after cautious consideration and careful evaluation, these measures are aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty and security. They are a safeguard for regional stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait. China’s position is justified, reasonable and legal; China’s measures are firm, strong and measured; and China’s military exercises are open, transparent and professional. They are consistent with domestic and international laws, as well as international practices.

China’s measures are not only to safeguard its own legitimate rights and interests, but also to safeguard international fairness and justice, the principle of international law of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as a basic norm governing international relations of non-interference in internal affairs. That is why more than 170 countries have openly reaffirmed their firm commitment to the one-China policy and underscored their understanding and support of China’s legitimate position. This is the unified voice of justice of the international community.
