On the afternoon of April 14, 2003, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held a phone conversation with Albanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilir Meta.

They had discussions on bilateral exchanges and cooperation this year in politics, economy, trade and culture. Li said Sino-Albanian relations have enjoyed good momentum, and the development of bilateral friendship and cooperation is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and the common aspiration of the two peoples. China will work with Albania for the overall development of bilateral relations.

Meta said he will make joint efforts with the Chinese side to push forward friendly cooperation between the two countries. He spoke highly of China's role in international affairs, hoping to exchange views with the Chinese side on international issues like the Balkan situation.

Meta reiterated that the Albanian government will adhere to the One China policy, for which Li expressed appreciation. Li said the Chinese people will never forget countries like Albania which made contributions in the 1960s and 1970s to the restoration of China's legitimate seat in the United Nations.
