More Leaders of Foreign Governments and International Organizations Express Their Condolence to China on the Earthquake Disaster in Sichuan (VI)

On May 13, 2008, more leaders of foreign governments and international organizations sent messages to Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, or in other ways, to express their deep condolence to the Chinese government and people over the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the people of India share the grief of their brethren in China. He expressed the confidence that the resilient Chinese people will overcome this grievous loss. He said that India stands ready to offer any assistance that may be needed at this difficult time. Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukerjee reaffirmed India's support to China in the disaster relief and post-disaster reconstruction efforts.

Bolat Nurgaliyev, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), issued a statement, expressing his deep condolence and sympathy toward the families of the victims and the people in the quake-hit areas and stressing that the people of the SCO member countries will stand united with the Chinese people to go through this difficult time.

Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon expressed his sincere condolence to the families of the victims and his strong belief that the Chinese people can overcome the disaster within a short period of time.

Uzbekistani President Islam Karimov expressed his deep sorrow over the huge casualties and property losses in the quake and his condolence to the families of the victims.

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev expressed his deep and sincere condolence to the Chinese government and people and his deep grief for the families of the victims. He wished the injured a quick recovery. Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Karabayev also sent a message of condolence to China.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko expressed his deep grief over the huge human losses in the deadly quake and extended his deep sympathy and condolence to the families of the victims.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko extended his deep sympathy for the Chinese people.

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Sabah extended his sincere sympathy for the families of the victims and wished the injured a quick recovery. He believed that under the leadership of the Chinese government the Chinese people can overcome the aftermath of the disaster.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ali Babacan extended their sincere sympathy and condolence toward the Chinese government and people and deep grief for the families of the victims.

Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva and Prime Minister Jose Socrates expressed their deep sorrow and sincere condolence for the Chinese government and people at the moment of profound grief and said that Portugal is willing to provide assistance for China's disaster relief work.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias expressed his condolence to the Chinese government and people and his deep sorrows for the victims. He believed that under the leadership of the Chinese government, the Chinese people will certainly overcome the disaster. Tassos Papadopoulos, former President of Cyprus, also expressed his condolence to the Chinese side.

José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, expressed his deep grief for the families of the victims, adding that the European people felt the same as the Chinese people and EU would do its best to support China in the disaster relief work. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy expressed his support to the Chinese government in carrying out large-scale rescue operations.

Lesotho's Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili expressed his deep sorrow over the heavy casualties caused by the devastating earthquake. He said that the government and people of Lesotho always stand together with the Chinese government and people. He believed that under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government, the indomitable Chinese people will certainly overcome the disaster, restore the production in the disaster-stricken areas and resume their normal lives. He also believed that China can host a successful Olympic Games. Lesotho Foreign Minister Mohlabi Kenneth Tsekoa also expressed his condolence to the Chinese side.

Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca expressed deep sympathies to the Chinese government on behalf of President Evo Morales and the Bolivian government and in his own name.

Venezuela's Foreign Minister Nicolás Maduro Moros extended his sympathy and condolence to the Chinese people, adding that Venezuela is willing to offer disaster relief assistance to China at any time.

South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma hoped that the people living in the disaster-hit areas can resume their normal life as soon as possible and rebuild their homes, adding that South African government is willing to offer necessary help.

Mamady Diaré, Ambassador of Guinea to China, on behalf of the Guinean government and people, expressed firm support to China in the efforts to overcome the earthquake.

On behalf of all members of the UN Security Council, Ambassador John Sawers, UK's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the current President of the UN Security Council, expressed condolence and sympathy to China over the devastating quake, which claimed heavy casualties and property losses, and deep grief for the victims. Sawers spoke highly of the Chinese government's prompt, timely and effective rescue operations.
