Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU Speaks on a Question Concerning the European Parliament’s Resolution on Hong Kong
2026-01-24 18:03

Q: On January 22, 2026, the European Parliament adopted a resolution concerning Hong Kong. What is China’s comment?

A: The European Parliament’s resolution concerning Hong Kong disregards facts and legal principles, slanders and smears the practice of “one country, two systems” and Hong Kong’s national security laws, blatantly interferes in Hong Kong’s judicial process, and grossly meddles in China’s internal affairs. China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition.

Hong Kong is a society governed by the rule of law, where laws must be observed and those who violate the law must be held accountable. Judicial authorities in Hong Kong SAR independently and impartially handle the Jimmy Lai case in accordance with the law, and no external forces have any right to make irresponsible remarks. Since the implementation of the National Security Law, the rule of law and business environment in Hong Kong have improved, the foundation for long-term prosperity and stability has been further consolidated, and the lawful rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents have been better protected in a safer environment.

China urges the European Parliament to respect China’s sovereignty and the rule of law in Hong Kong, stop lending support to anti-China forces destabilizing Hong Kong, and stop meddling in Hong Kong’s judicial affairs and interfering in China’s internal affairs in any form. The central government of China firmly supports the Hong Kong SAR in governing Hong Kong in accordance with the law.
