Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU Speaks on a Question Concerning the European External Action Service’s Statement on Taiwan-related issues
2024-01-14 10:35

Q: On January 13, the Spokesperson of the European External Action Service issued a statement on the election in Taiwan, stating that the European Union welcomes the elections held in Taiwan, congratulates the voters and remains concerned about growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait. What is your comment?

A: The Taiwan question is an internal affair of China. The elections held in the Taiwan region are China’s local affairs that brook no external interference.

The Taiwan question is at the very core of China’s core interests. The one-China principle is a prevailing consensus among the international community and a basic norm in international relations. The most fundamental way to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is to uphold the one-China principle. We urge the EU side to fully recognize the high sensitivity of the Taiwan question, abide by the one-China principle, speak and act cautiously when dealing with Taiwan-related issues, stop sending wrong signals to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, and do more things that are conducive to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
