On December 16, 2022, Ambassador Fu Cong, new head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, presented his Letter of Credence to President of the European Council Charles Michel, and had talks with him in an amicable and friendly atmosphere.

Ambassador Fu conveyed President Xi Jinping’s warm regards to President Michel and expressed appreciation for the thoughtful arrangements made for the presentation of his Letter of Credence. He said that a clear and important message from the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is the continuity and stability of China’s internal and external policies. Internally, China will follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, apply a people-centered development philosophy, and remain committed to deepening reform and opening up. Externally, China will continue to uphold world peace, promote common development, and work with other countries in building a community with a shared future for mankind. A China marching toward modernization will bring opportunities for the EU and the wider world. President Michel’s visit to China soon after the 20th CPC National Congress early this month demonstrates the EU’s willingness to develop bilateral relations. The significant consensus reached by the two leaders set a clear direction for the development of China-EU relations. China hopes that the EU could become an important partner in China’s pursuit of Chinese modernization, and share the opportunities brought by China’s huge market and its efforts to advance institutional opening up and deepen international cooperation. China stands ready to work with the EU to follow through the important consensus reached by the two leaders and deepen exchanges and cooperation in various fields.

Ambassador Fu noted that we are facing a complex and fluid international landscape. China and the EU are two major forces upholding world peace, two big markets promoting shared development, and two great civilizations promoting human progress. It serves the interests of China and the EU and the broader international community to uphold the comprehensive strategic partnership and maintain an onward and upward momentum of bilateral cooperation in the principle of mutual benefit and win-win results. China and the EU should advance the relationship along the right track, focus on cooperation, and work to achieve real results from cooperation in all fields. The two sides should join hands to tackle global challenges, uphold multilateralism, and improve global governance, so as to bring greater stability to the world. Ambassador Fu expressed his readiness to do his part to enhance dialogue and communication, seek cooperation and win-win results between China and the EU, and foster friendship between the two peoples.

President Michel welcomed Ambassador Fu for assuming the new role and expressed appreciation to President Xi Jinping for inviting him to visit China soon after the 20th CPC National Congress. Stressing that it was a significant and useful visit, President Michel was briefed by President Xi on the important outcomes of the Congress as well as the characteristics of the Chinese path to modernization, which is good for the EU to have a better understanding of China. President Michel believed that the important consensus reached with President Xi Jinping will play an important leading role in the development of China-EU relations, and said that himself, the EU and its member states all attach great importance to China-EU relations. The EU is ready to work with China to strengthen strategic communication, enhance mutual understanding, maintain openness and cooperation, and properly manage differences, and contribute to world peace, stability and development. President Michel looked forward to seeing Ambassador Fu play an important role in this regard.

Ambassador Fu arrived in Brussels on December 10, 2022 to assume his new role as head of the Chinese Mission to the EU and presented the copy of his Letter of Credence on December 13.
