2023-01-12 01:11

On January 10, 2023, Ambassador Fu Cong, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, met Mircea Geoană, Deputy Secretary General of NATO. They had candid, in-depth exchanges of views on China-NATO relations, NATO’s perception of China, and other issues.

Ambassador Fu said that the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has drawn a blueprint for China’s future development. One of the most important messages from the Congress is that China will adhere to an independent foreign policy of peace and pursue a defensive national defense policy. No matter what stage of development China reaches, it will never seek hegemony or engage in expansionism. The incorporation of peaceful development in China’s Constitution and the Constitution of CPC is a solemn commitment to the international community. China’s pursuit of Chinese modernization is to deliver a better life to the Chinese people. It will not threaten anyone, try to replace anyone, still less present systemic challenges to any country or organization. NATO is an important military alliance. It needs to stay within its geographical parameters, foster a rational, right perception of China, and view China’s development in an objective manner, to play a constructive role for regional and global peace and security. China is open to having dialogue and exchanges and stands ready to jointly promote a healthy, stable relationship with NATO.

Mr. Geoană congratulated Ambassador Fu for assuming the new role and recognized China’s remarkable achievements in development. He noted that NATO regards China as the most significant player in the world and attaches importance to the impact of the rise of China. NATO does not perceive China as a rival and is willing to maintain constructive contacts and dialogue with China.

They also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis and other issues.
