On February 27, 2023, Ambassador Fu Cong met Rita Adam, Head of the Swiss Mission to the EU. They had exchanges of views on China-Switzerland relations and issues of shared interest.
Ambassador Fu said that China attaches great importance to developing relations with European countries, including Switzerland, and always sees dialogue and cooperation as the mainstream in China-EU relations. Switzerland is among the first Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. The relationship between the two countries has maintained a positive momentum in recent years. Recently, China has included Switzerland in the 20 destination countries for its resumed outbound group tours, which indicates the sound foundation and promising future of China-Switzerland relations. China stands ready to join hands with Switzerland to maintain a healthy, stable bilateral relationship.
Ambassador Fu Cong briefed Ms. Adam on The Global Security Initiative Concept Paper and China’s Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis. He noted that the Global Security Initiative (GSI) proposed by President Xi Jinping upholds the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, and advocates a new path to security featuring dialogue over confrontation, partnership over alliance, and win-win over zero-sum. The concept paper expounds the core ideas and principles of the GSI, identifies the priorities, platforms and mechanisms of cooperation, and demonstrates China’s sense of responsibility for safeguarding world peace and firm resolve to defend global security. On Ukraine, China has always taken an objective and fair stance and vigorously facilitate peace talks. The position paper is developed and released by China at the time when it has been a year since the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis. This demonstrates that China is playing a constructive role in seeking crisis settlement and prepared to work with the international community for the early realization of peace. China is also ready to enhance communication and exchanges with Switzerland, so as to jointly make positive contribution to safeguarding world peace and security and dealing with conflicts and hotspot issues.
Ms. Adam congratulated Ambassador Fu for assuming the new role and recognized China as an important trade partner of Switzerland. Switzerland attaches great importance to developing relations with China, follows the development of China-EU relations, and takes seriously China’s position on global security and the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis. It is ready to further exchanges and cooperation with China.
They also exchanged views on their respective relations with the EU, the Ukraine crisis and other issues.
