Q: An EU official accused on social media the Hong Kong police of taking enforcement actions against relevant personnel. What is China’s comment?
A: Hong Kong is a law-based society where laws must be observed and lawbreakers held accountable. The Hong Kong police’s enforcement actions against those who have absconded overseas and long engaged in destabilizing activities are in line with the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. These are justified actions that meet people’s aspirations, and comply with international law and customary practice.
Hong Kong affairs are purely China’s internal affairs. We firmly oppose the EU’s interference in Hong Kong affairs under the pretext of upholding the so-called democracy and freedom. We urge the EU to abide by international law and the basic norms governing international relations, respect China’s sovereignty and Hong Kong’s rule of law, and stop emboldening anti-China elements destabilizing Hong Kong.
